How to Apply Clip-in Hair Extensions In Six Easy Steps
Clip-in hair extensions are a fantastic way to add instant length and volume without the commitment of having them permanently weaved or bonded. They can also be an invaluable aid for braiding and hair-up styles, allowing the stylist to create more complex or voluminous hairstyles which would otherwise only be reserved for those who are lucky enough to have naturally long, thick hair.
This is obviously great news for the majority of us which fall into the former category of dull and fine. It means that your genetics can no longer restrict you from celebrity hair! These temporary hair extensions are ideal for special occasions such as weddings and events when it’s crucial to look your best. However, applying them can sometimes be a little tricky and even a little daunting. But that’s by no means a reason not to try them so here is an easy-to-follow guide for putting in those extensions.
1. Get The First Section Right
Start as you mean to go on as they say. If you get the first section correct, you can simply follow the pattern. Using a comb, make a horizontal section just above the nape of the neck. It should be on the first flattest part of the neck you can feel so the clips do not sag into the dip of the neck.
2. Backcomb the hair
Using a comb, gently push the hair at the roots in the opposite direction a few times. This will ensure your clips will sit in place along the parting. When it comes to removing the clips, spray the backcomb with a good detangler before gently combing it out.
3. Clip the hair in
Measure which piece fits this particular section and push the clips open. Slide each clip into the backcombed root and snap each clip back to close. Your piece should now hang unaided in the hair.
4. Move Up & Repeat
Make another section 1-2 inches above the first, depending on how thick the hair is. You will repeat this process another 2-3 times at the back, depending on how many pieces you have. Ideally your clip-ins should be custom made to ensure each piece fits the head perfectly. If your clips are not bespoke, you may need to adjust the width of them.
5. Angle The Side Pieces
You will have two or more smaller pieces for the sides to ensure you have hair falling around the face when wearing the extensions down. It is important not to clip these in horizontally; if you do, there’s a good chance you’ll see the corners of these pieces in the crown of your head. Instead angle them to face up from the back; meaning the hair is forced into the face, away from the crown.
6. Instant Hair & Volume!
Brush the hair down using a special brush which won’t pull the hair extensions out. Ensure that the weft can’t be seen at any point in the hair and style as required. The hair can now be worn for several hours and will give any hairstyle incredible length and volume. Just ensure you remember to take them all off along with your make-up before you go to bed!
